Amboseli and Chyulu Hills National parks

Amboseli and Chyulu Hills National parks : Chyulu Hills National Park is located on the plains between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Parks. The Hills are made up of a range of mountains with hundreds of volcano cones on top making it one of the best scenic National park in Kenya. It is believed that the last eruption took place in 1856 and the area is still regarded as an active volcano. Chyulu Hills landscape, which consists of forest savanna and highland forest, serves as a home to a wide variety of wildlife.

The History of Amboseli and Chyulu Hills region

The area around Amboseli National Park has a rich and lengthy history. It was initially only populated by hunter-gatherers, until the arrival of the Kamba and Chagga tribes. Beginning in the early seventeenth century, Maasai cattle herders joined these peoples as they carried on with their agricultural practices. The area was discovered by Europeans in 1883 thanks to the travels of Joseph Thomson, whose name is commemorated in the Thomson’s gazelle. The British Empire traders needed a safe route from the eastern coast of Africa to just north of Lake Victoria, and Thomson had been asked by the Royal Geographical Society to create one. This route would be unknown to other traders in the region. His reports aroused interest in Amboseli, and he was successful in his purpose. The colonial settlers settled there.

The establishment of the Southern Maasai Reserve by the colonial authority in 1899, which effectively confined the Maasai people to an area useless to colonial farmers, is the next noteworthy date. This restriction was lifted in 1948 when the government granted the Maasai people access to the entire region while also establishing the Amboseli Reserve in an effort to protect the local species. Even after the Kajiado District Council seized power in 1961, tourism and encroachment caused the land to deteriorate. President Jomo Kenyatta decided to designate the region as a national park in 1974 in order to preserve it. Amboseli was most recently designated as a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. In 1983, Chyulu Hills was declared a national park.

The Wildlife composition

Thomson talked on the abundance of wildlife in Amboseli and the amazing contrast between its dried-up lake bed and lush marshes. The swamp area is more reliable and a great  source of water and because of that it accounts for the abundance of wildlife especially during the dry season. The park is dominated by the 5,000-meter-tall Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, whose meltwater keeps the marshes alive all year round. Although Amboseli features woods as well, its marshes are by far its most notable feature.

Amboseli boasts incredibly outstanding bird populations with over 400 species identified to date is a great safari in kenya destination for birdwatchers. The park is home to several endangered species, including the Madagascar pond-heron, lesser kestrel, and lesser flamingo. There are several identified Water birds which are particularly common here. Some of the frequently seen birds include bustards, buzzards, crakes, cranes, eagles, egrets, falcons, francolins, geese, goshawks, harriers, and herons, there are also bee-eaters. These are just some of the plenty birds seen here making the region the best birding safari destination in Kenya.
